A Russian glide bomb struck an apartment building in Sumy, Ukraine, on Friday, killing two people and injuring seven others, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and local officials. Among the injured, three were in serious condition, including a 13-year-old girl.
Zelenskiy described the strike as “absolutely inhuman” in a post on Telegram. He noted that emergency crews had rescued four individuals, one of whom was a child, and warned that additional victims might still be buried beneath the rubble.
Rescue Efforts and Casualties in Sumy
The bomb impacted the structure between the third and fourth floors of the residential block. Photographs shared by the president displayed a shattered façade as rescue workers moved through the debris. The head of Sumy’s city council confirmed that the two people who died were municipal employees.

Regional Governor Oleh Hryhorov gave further details about those hurt, noting that three of the injured were in serious condition. He added that Sumy lies close to the Russian border and has frequently been targeted as Russia attempts to create a buffer zone, often directing fire at civilian infrastructure.
Wider Russian Strikes Across Ukraine
On the same day, Russian forces hit a clinic in Pavlohrad and a logistics centre located on the outskirts of Kyiv. Earlier in the day, an attack on Balakliia, a city in the Kharkiv region, resulted in a pair of fatalities and a pair of wounded, as reported by the local military administration head Vitali Karabanov.
Balakliia was initially seized by Russian troops during the 2022 invasion and later recaptured by Ukrainian forces within the same year. Kyiv had come under a Russian missile attack earlier in the evening; Mayor Vitali Klitschko said there was no indication of casualties or damage.
