The 34th Macao International Fireworks Display Contest is set to return this September, featuring teams from ten countries and large-scale drone shows for the first time. The event will take place over five evenings, from 12 September to 4 October, with two 18-minute displays each night.
The contest has grown into one of the city’s most anticipated events since its launch in 1989, drawing pyrotechnic teams from around the world to compete at the sea area in front of the Macau Tower. This year’s theme is Set Sail for Macao, where the Silk Road Sparkles.
Debuts and Returning Favourites
The first night, on 12 September, will feature two newcomers to the Macao competition: Brazil and Switzerland. Both teams will make their Macao debuts, along with teams from Italy and Portugal. The opening evening will also introduce the contest’s new drone component.
The competition will continue on 19 September with Italy and Canada, followed by Portugal and Korea on 25 September, and Thailand and China on 1 October. The Philippines and the United Kingdom will close the contest on 4 October.
Viewing Locations and Entertainment
Six viewing locations are recommended, including the waterfront stretching from the Kun Iam Ecumenical Centre to the Kun Iam Statue Waterfront Recreation Area. Sound systems will broadcast the music synchronised with each performance, and the soundtrack will be available through TDM – Radio Macao’s Chinese Channel (FM100.7).

The Fireworks Carnival will return to the waterfront beside the Macao Science Center on every competition night, featuring food, live performances, and games. The carnival will run from 5:30 pm to 10:30 pm, giving visitors plenty of reason to arrive before the first fireworks are launched.
Interactive Activities
An online interactive game will be available through MGTO’s WeChat mini-program, allowing players to complete challenges or predict which team will win the top prize. Those who guess correctly will be entered into a lucky draw for prizes, including MGTO souvenirs and a round-trip air ticket between Macao and the Chinese mainland.
Photography, drawing, and AI-generated art competitions will also be held, inspired by the event and its colourful displays. The 34th Macao International Fireworks Display Contest offers a range of experiences, from the drone performances and waterfront carnival to the interactive activities and competitions.
With its unique blend of pyrotechnics, music, and aerial formations, the contest is expected to attract a large audience. The addition of large-scale drone shows will undoubtedly enhance the experience, making this year’s event one to remember.
