The German military is evaluating 30 artificial intelligence tools to enhance battlefield decision-making, with plans to deploy a system by 2027. According to a senior military official, the goal is to process vast amounts of data from drones and satellites faster than humanly possible. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernize the military’s capabilities in an era where data-driven warfare is becoming the norm. The sheer volume of information generated by modern surveillance technologies necessitates advanced AI systems to sift through and analyze data in real-time, ensuring that commanders have actionable intelligence at their fingertips.

Vice Admiral Thomas Daum, chief of the military’s cyber command, told Handelsblatt that a prototype is expected in the second quarter of 2027, with full implementation by 2028. The initiative reflects lessons from the Ukraine war, where the surge in data has made AI essential for maintaining situational awareness. Daum emphasized that the rapid pace of technological advancement in warfare requires the military to adapt quickly. The Ukraine conflict has showed the importance of not only collecting data but also interpreting it swiftly to gain a strategic edge. This has prompted Germany to accelerate its AI integration efforts, ensuring it remains competitive on the global stage.

European Focus Amid U.S. Concerns

Most of the AI tools under review are from German companies, with France’s ChapsVision as a notable foreign contender. This aligns with broader European efforts to reduce reliance on U.S. AI systems, such as Palantir’s Maven. The push for European-made solutions is driven by a desire to support a homegrown tech industry capable of competing globally while ensuring that sensitive military data remains within the continent. By prioritizing domestic and European vendors, Germany aims to strengthen its strategic autonomy and reduce vulnerabilities associated with foreign dependencies.

In April, Daum ruled out purchasing Maven, citing concerns over data sovereignty and dependence on the U.S. The decision comes as Europe seeks to assert its technological independence, particularly after President Donald Trump threatened to withdraw from NATO. Trump’s rhetoric raised questions about the reliability of the U.S. as an ally, prompting European nations to invest in their own capabilities. This shift is not just about technology but also about safeguarding national interests in an increasingly uncertain geopolitical environment.

The Role of AI in Modern Warfare

The war in Ukraine has showed the need for AI in processing battlefield data. Drones and satellites generate vast streams of information, making the battlefield more transparent but overwhelming for human analysts. AI systems can identify patterns, predict enemy movements, and provide real-time recommendations, significantly enhancing operational efficiency. For instance, AI can analyze satellite imagery to detect troop movements or identify potential ambush points, tasks that would take human analysts much longer to accomplish.

AI systems like Maven, already used by the U.S. and NATO, analyze images and video to improve decision-making. However, European resistance to U.S. solutions highlights growing concerns about technological autonomy. The reluctance to adopt U.S. systems is not just about data sovereignty but also about maintaining control over critical military technologies. By developing its own AI capabilities, Europe aims to ensure that its defense strategies are not influenced by external actors, thereby preserving its strategic independence.

The German military’s AI initiative is on a tight schedule. A prototype is expected by Q2 2027, with full deployment by 2028.
