Georgia’s luxury beauty sector expands rapidly

Georgia’s premium beauty market has grown steadily over the last thirty years, shaped by one company’s efforts to bring international brands to local consumers. Academy Group, under director Irina Kapanadze, has become a key distributor for major names like Estée Lauder Companies.

The company began in the 1990s when investor Vakhtang Pkhakadze introduced high-end beauty products to Georgia. Early steps included the Lutecia perfume retail chain and an exclusive deal with Yves Rocher. Over time, Pkhakadze played a key role in developing the official and exclusive distribution of Estée Lauder Companies brands in Georgia.

From exclusive retail to regional distribution

Academy Group initially operated under an exclusive retail model, handling both import and sales. That method worked early on but later restricted expansion. The company then adopted a broader distribution strategy, choosing retail partners that met international standards for product handling, store design, and customer service.

“Our vision was never just about selling products,” Kapanadze said. “We aimed to create an ecosystem—bringing in leading brands, training professionals, and ensuring every step met global benchmarks.”

The shift required reorganizing logistics, brand management, and marketing. The results were clear. Academy Group became Georgia’s first fully integrated premium beauty distributor, later moving into Armenia and Azerbaijan. It now serves as a regional hub, overseeing brand development across the Caucasus.

What official distribution means for consumers

Partnering with global brands like Estée Lauder involves strict requirements. Every detail, from product displays to sales training, must align with international standards. For Academy Group, this means preserving each brand’s identity while adapting to local tastes.

Official distribution provides advantages over gray-market channels. Products arrive directly from manufacturers or authorized warehouses, ensuring proper storage. Customers receive accurate information, valid warranties, and access to the latest launches—often simultaneously with major markets like New York or Paris.

“Transparency and professionalism guide our approach,” Kapanadze said. “People should always know who the official representative is and what standards they follow.”

Challenges in a competitive market

Georgia’s premium beauty sector faces increasing competition. More international brands are entering the market, giving consumers additional options.

Academy Group doesn’t compete on price. Instead, it emphasizes value through a curated brand selection, expert advice, and a high-end shopping experience.

“Our goal isn’t just to keep up with change,” Kapanadze said. “We use competition to improve the entire industry.”

The company’s strategy focuses on three areas: strengthening ties with existing brands, introducing new ones, and expanding its retail network. Regional growth remains a priority, with Armenia and Azerbaijan offering opportunities to present a unified Caucasus market to international partners.

Global brands demand reliability. They expect financial stability, market expertise, and strict adherence to brand guidelines. “Strong partnerships rely on trust,” Kapanadze said. “Brands want to know their products are long-term assets, not just commodities.”

Georgia’s beauty market has evolved significantly since the 1990s. What began with a few imported fragrances has become a sophisticated industry where consumers seek authenticity and quality. Academy Group’s role in this transformation goes beyond distribution—it sets the standard for premium beauty in the region.

The company continues refining its approach, ensuring every product, store, and interaction reflects the premium experience customers expect.
