Spotify Suffers Outage Amid Strong Revenue Growth

Spotify suffered a service outage on July 27, 2026, affecting users around the world.

Problems surfaced around 5 a.m., with Downdetector logging over 700 complaints by 9 a.m. Most issues involved the web player, where songs either failed to play or skipped without starting. Desktop users had mixed experiences—some streamed without trouble, while others faced the same disruptions.

Spotify acknowledges the problem but offers no immediate fix

The company confirmed the issue through its support channels, saying it was looking into a “Can’t play this right now” error. It added that desktop applications were less affected than the web player. Users also reported trouble accepting invitations for Spotify Duo and Family plans.

By late morning, complaints began dropping, signaling the disruption was easing. No full explanation had been given at the time. The outage was not total; some users continued using the service normally.

Platforms like Downdetector rely on user reports, which can signal problems but do not provide official numbers. The surge in complaints pointed to a major, though not universal, interruption.

Strong financial performance precedes the outage

The service interruption followed Spotify’s first-quarter 2026 earnings report, which showed strong growth. Monthly active users climbed to 761 million, a 12% increase from the previous year, while premium subscribers rose 9% to 293 million. The company noted higher engagement and better profitability, with gross margins reaching 33%—its second-highest level ever.

This shift toward profitability has taken years. Once criticized for high music licensing costs and competition from Apple Music and Amazon Music, the company adjusted by raising subscription prices, improving ad technology, and expanding into podcasts and audiobooks. Personalization powered by artificial intelligence has also become central to its approach.

The outage may have given competitors a temporary edge. Apple Music, with its tight iPhone integration, could benefit most, especially among frustrated users. Amazon Music, YouTube Music, and regional services like Tencent Music also stand to gain, depending on what listeners value most.

Technical issues are not new for Spotify, but the timing—just after strong earnings—creates an unusual contrast. Earlier in 2026, founder Daniel Ek stepped back from the CEO role to become executive chairman, marking a new phase. Co-CEOs Alex Norström and Gustav Söderström now lead a strategy focused on AI, personalization, and expanding beyond music streaming.

The company has invested heavily in AI tools to strengthen its position. It introduced AI-driven recommendations, personalized playlists, and conversational discovery features.

For users still facing issues, Spotify suggests restarting the app, checking internet connections, logging out and back in, or clearing browser cache for web player problems. Its official status channels remain the best source for updates on service disruptions.

The cause of the outage is still unconfirmed. There is no sign it resulted from a cyberattack. Service interruptions can stem from software bugs, infrastructure failures, or third-party service problems—none of which necessarily indicate broader operational weaknesses.
